This
scene is based on William Carlos Williams’ "The Red
Wheelbarrow":
So much depends
upon a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.
That's
the whole poem. Even though it's very short,
literary critics have written pages and pages about
it. I will not tire you with any of what they say;
nevertheless, most of us can enjoy a striking image
when it is three-dimensional in front of us.
The Red
Wheelbarrow scene is included in the "Glencoe
Literature - The Readers Choice: American
Literature" and McDougal Littel's "The Language of
Literature" textbooks intended for high school
juniors.
